Camel race in Marrakech

A camel race is scheduled to take place in Marrakech on February 13. The race is a yearly event, which has been taking place every year since 1991. It is organized by the United Arab Emirates, as part of their efforts to encourage camel ranching in Morocco. Camel racing are very popular in Gulf states like Oman, Qatar and the UAE.

 

This year in Morocco, hundreds of camels, coming mainly from Laâyoune, Sakia El Hamra, Guelmim and Kelâat Sraghna, are expected to be part of the race. <i>Aujourd'hui</i> reported that prizes will be granted to the owners of the southern camels. The winner can receive up to 13,000 Moroccan Dirhams while a prize of 3,000 Dirhams will be granted for the owner of the camel which wins the second place. The entrance to this event is free.
