During a meeting, which was held at the National Library of Algiers last week, to commemorate the 44th anniversary of 17 October 1961 demonstrations in Paris, Algerian historians and lawyers have called the French Government to finally recognize "the sufferings endured by the Algerian people because of colonialism".

Algerie Presse Service reports that the secretary-general of the 8 May 1945 Foundation, Mekhloufi Aouli indicated that if steps in this direction will not be taken "assertions like ‘colonialism has a positive role’ will be repeated in the future".
