Prosecutors in Azbakeya arrested 17 suspects on Monday linked to a protest by the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies aimed at blocking Metro rail travel in Cairo.
The suspects will be held pending investigations.
Security forces in Cairo had arrested the 17 protesters on charges of possession of graffiti spray cans. The suspects intended to use them to write statements insulting the police and armed forces, as well as attempting to disrupt the Metro on Sunday, authorities said.
Security forces maintained a high presence in Metro stations across Cairo on Sunday, following a call by pro-Morsi protesters to swamp trains during rush hour periods.
The pro-Morsi National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy had called for "civil disobedience" on Metro trains. The protests were widely perceived to be small. Eyewitnesses suggested on Sunday the alliance's campaign may be running out of steam.
