Clashes between police and residents in north Cairo have left four people dead, according to the government health ministry.

The clashes broke out on Saturday night in the Shubra al-Kheima district after a man was killed by a stray bullet while police were chasing a suspected drug dealer.

At least 12 people were wounded including three policemen.

Police brutality was one of the driving factors behind the movement to overthrow the former President Hosni Mubarak.

Videos posted on Youtube on Sunday appeared to show groups of civilians clashing with police on Saturday.

The crowds reportedly tried to break into a police station in the area and blocked traffic.
