US President George W. Bush telephoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Friday to discuss the Middle East conflict and reaffirm their "strong partnership" in the global war on terrorism, said reports.

The two leaders discussed the "disastrous situation" in the Palestinian territories, Al Ahram daily said.

“The US president stressed that his country was continuing with its role in ending the dangerous and deteriorating situation between the Israel and the Palestinians,” said the Cairo-based paper.

Mubarak stressed "the responsibility of the United States and of the international community to work seriously and rapidly to rescue this dangerous situation and stop the savage carnage."

He also called on Washington and the international community to work to "put an end to the operations of vengeance between the two sides," reported AFP, citing the Egyptian official agency, MENA.

Mubarak said it was necessary to "halt the violence" to "save the peace and preserve the security and stability of the peoples of the region," it said.

Meanwhile, AFP quoted a statement by the White House as saying, "The president thanked Egypt for its effective and consistent cooperation against terrorism, and for Egypt's close ties to the United States."

Bush also praised Egypt for hosting operation Bright Star, the world's largest military wargames, saying it "contributes to coalition military planning and operations."

The operation began October 8 and ends November 1 – Albawaba.com
