An explosion in central Turkey has killed 13 soldiers and injured 48 others, the military said in a statement carried by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by a car bomb, took place near the Erciyes University in Kayseri province at about 8:45 am (0545 GMT).

The soldiers had been on an excursion as part of their off-duty privileges, local media reports said.

Last weekend, a car bomb and suicide bomber exploded outside a football stadium in Istanbul, killing 44 people, including 36 police officers.

A hardline Kurdish militant group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), claimed responsibility for that attack.
