At least 22 people were killed in a deadly road accident in northern Egypt on Monday evening.

Two passenger buses collided in Meit Ghamr in the Nile Delta province of Dakahliya, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Mujahid said in a statement.

“Twenty-two people were killed and 11 others injured in the accident,” he added.

Egypt has the Middle East's highest road fatality rate, according to figures issued by the state-run Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Around 7,115 people (19.5 people each day) were killed in road accidents in Egypt in 2011, CAPMAS said.
