Thirteen bus passengers were shot dead and nine injured in a shooting attack by an armed group in a suburb of the Algerian capital, the APS agency reported quoting security sources.

The five or six assailants, armed with machine guns, riddled the bus with bullets at Friday evening in the suburb of Eucalyptus, witnesses told APS

Eucalyptus is located near the airport in the Mitidja agricultural region, several kilometers from Algeria's capital.

Extremists belonging to the hardline Armed Islamic Group (GIA), which is waging an armed insurgency against the country's secular authorities, are known to frequently operate in this area.

Late on Thursday, two bus passengers were also killed at Bou Ismail, about 40 kilometers west of the capital.

In addition, seven youths were killed and two injured on June 22 by an armed group while they were playing football at the port of Zeralda, about 20 kilometers west of Algiers.
