January 15, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s military ruler, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Wednesday ordered an investigation into alleged abuses against civilians in Al Jazirah state, where the army recently clashed with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The announcement came after rights groups and political factions accused the army of killing and detaining dozens of civilians in Kambo Tiba, alleging the abuses targeted the “Al Kanabi” community.

These accusations followed the army’s recapture of Wad Madani, the state capital, from the RSF. The residents of Kambo Tiba were accused of collaborating with the paramilitary forces.

A statement from the Sovereign Council said the investigative committee would be headed by Yasir Bashir al-Bukhari, First Assistant to the Attorney General, and tasked with gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and documenting the events. The committee is required to submit its findings within a week.

The army has acknowledged some “individual transgressions” by its forces in Al Jazirah but has not commented specifically on the allegations in Kambo Tiba.

In a separate decree, Burhan also dismissed the acting governor of Sennar state, Tawfiq Mohamed Ali, following a recommendation from the Council of Ministers. No further details were provided.
