A British aircraft carrier and two escort vessels began transiting the Suez Canal on Saturday, returning from duty in the Indian Ocean, a canal source said.
The aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, the frigate HMS Cornwall and the fleet auxiliary vessel Brambleleaf left the port of Suez at the south end of the canal headed northward to the Mediterranean Sea, the source said, according to AFP.
The carrier served as flagship of British naval forces participating in the US-led war against terrorism prior to its replacement by the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean.
