British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said Monday the international community should be open to discussions with Iran and Syria to help solve the Israeli-Palestinian crisis and to bolster the reconstruction of Iraq.
"The question is, 'will either Iran or Syria or both decide to end their self imposed isolation and to begin to cooperate more with the international community'," Beckett said ahead an EU foreign ministers meeting, held in the Belgian capital. According to the AP, she said both nations had to be "part of the solution instead of being part of the problem."
Later in the day, British PM Tony Blair is expected to call for dialogue with Iran and Syria to secure peace in the Middle East, press reports have indicated. According to them, Blair believes the two states should be warned of the consequences of failing to help.
