A car bomb detonated inside a market in the north of Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Tuesday, causing at least eight deaths and several injuries, state television reported.

"[An extremist] car bomb exploded in the vegetable market in Masaken Barzeh in Damascus, causing deaths and injuries," state television said in a breaking news announcement.

There were no confirmed reports on the number of casualties in the explosion.

The blast was also reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, which said it the explosion struck the garage of a club for police officers in the area.

The monitor also provided reports of several deaths and injuries from the blast but was unable to give an exact figure.

Car bombs have frequently been used in the Syrian war, often to devastating effect.

While the capital remains mostly unaffected, an attack using multiple bombings near the Sayyida Zeinab shrine on the outskirts of the city left at least 71 people dead last month.

Over 260,000 people have died in Syria's conflict since it began in March 2011.
