Senior Muslim Brotherhood politician Mohamed Al Beltagi was arrested by Egyptian police on Thursday, Egyptian state media and police officials said.
Beltagi, who had issed several defiant video messages whilst in hiding, was the latest Muslim Brotherhood leader to be detained in the Egyptian government's crackdown on the movement, AFP reported.
A former Egyptian MP, Beltagi became one of the most "vociferious opponents of the popularly backed military coup" that led to the ousting of former Islamist presidnet Mohamed Morsi in early July, according to AFP.
Beltagi was arrested by police in a small village on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt's state television reported.
Large swathes of the Brotherhood's leadership have been arrested by government authorities, including Mohamed Badie, the group's Supreme Guide.
Badie and his colleagues are set to stand trial over their alleged involvement in the murder of protesters who stormed the Brotherhood's headquarters on June 30, AFP reported.
