Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on Monday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was working to ease tensions in the Palestinian territories but that he was not fully implementing a truce reached last month.

"We see a certain effort by chairman Arafat to calm things down but the results show no real decrease in violence," Barak told reporters after addressing a closed meeting of parliament's defense and foreign affairs committee.

"This means that the Sharm understandings are not being implemented by the other side," he said referring to an agreement at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh last month for both sides to take steps to end the wave of deadly violence -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
