Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday there could be no agreement with the Palestinians unless the latter soften their stance.
Speaking after two hours of talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Barak said, "Arab leaders, like those of the whole world, understand better that without a softening by the other side there will be no agreement."
He added "in the next few weeks we will know if there is an opening."
Barak's talks with Mubarak on the future of the Middle East peace process came a day after Palestinian President Yasser Arafat met the Egyptian leader on the last leg of a tour of Arab states garnering support in the wake of the failed Camp David summit.
Israeli officials said Barak would give the Egyptian leader, a key player in the Middle East, his own account of what happened at Camp David.
Israeli media reports said he would ask Mubarak to try to persuade Arafat to adopt a less uncompromising stance on the question of Jerusalem -- ALEXANDRIA, Egypt (AFP)
