ALBAWABA - Following weeks of deadly protests in Bangladesh that resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a court announced launching a murder investigation into the ousted PM and her administration.
Hasina, along with 6 top officials in her administration will be under investigation for deliberate murder of a man during the latest protests that swept the nation. More than 450 were killed in the weeks of deadly demonstrations which led to ending years of her iron-fist reign.
Mamun Mia, a lawyer who brought the case to the Bangladeshi authorities on behalf of a private citizen stated that "A case has been filed against Sheikh Hasina and six more,".
He stated that the Dhaka Metropolitan Court has directed police to accept "the murder case against the accused persons," which is the first stage in a criminal investigation under Bangladeshi law.
Mia's court filing also implicated Asaduzzaman Khan, Hasina's former home minister, and Obaidul Quader, the Awami League party's general secretary.
It also lists four prominent police officers chosen by Hasina's administration who have subsequently left their positions. The seven are accused of being responsible for the death of a grocery shop owner who was shot on July 19 by police while forcibly repressing protests.
According to the Daily Star newspaper, the action was filed on behalf of Amir Hamza Shatil, a resident of the area where the shooting occurred and a "well-wisher" of the victim.
Hasina's government has been accused of massive human rights violations, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of her political opponents.
