Heavy rain and storms lashed Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh Saturday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, weather officials said.
Activity in the Chittagong and Mongla seaports was however severely disrupted and all ships and fishing trawlers were advised not to put out to sea.
Dhaka, where six inches of rain (15cm) of rain fell in just six hours, was paralyzed by flooded roads which forced schools to shut down and obliged most residents to stay at home.
State-run Bangladesh Television said incessant rains and winds up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) an hour were pounding central and northeastern Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Betar radio said Red Crescent volunteers had been alerted to prepare the emergency evacuation of thousands of villagers and fishing families in coastal areas threatened by flooding.
