Bahrain’s Information Minister Nabeel Al Hamer warned nationals Saturday not to use freedom of expression for personal gain or to create disunity, reported the Gulf Daily News.
“Freedom of expression has become a reality in Bahrain and I invite everyone to practice this right. But there are some who choose to misuse this freedom,” he told a seminar on the National Action Charter.
The charter gives the public the freedom to express their opinion, except in areas that prohibit the development of Bahrain or create disunity, said the paper.
“There are some who are using their freedom of speech for personal gain or to divide people,” said the minister.
Al Hamer said freedom of expression must be used in a responsible, not destructive, manner.
The seminar, which was organised by Budaiya Club, was attended by about 400 people.
Al Hamer added “the media should have rights but should not overstep them.”
There should be laws to protect journalists and there should also be laws to protect the public from journalists, said Al Hamer – Albawaba.com
