Bahrain student sentenced for insulting King on Twitter

A 17 year-old has been sentenced to a year in prison for insulting the Bahraini King on Twitter, al Jazeera reported.

Ali Al Shofa was sentenced at a lower criminal court, headed by a member of the ruling family, according to the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR).

The high school student was accused of posting an insulting tweet about Sheikh Hamad Al-Khalifa through the @alkawarahnews account. He was arrested in a dawn house raid on 12 March 2013, according to the Centre.

The sentencing is part of a wider crackdwon on free speech in the Gulf Kingdom.

Amnesty International reported that five Twitter users were sentenced each to a year in prison for inuslting the King in May.
