On Wednesday, a Bahrain court jailed eight protestors and sentenced another to death after convicting them of killing a policeman last year. Two of the protestors were sentenced to five to six years while six were sentenced to life in prison.
The officer, Mohamed Atef, died after he was hit by a petrol bomb during a confrontation with protesters near Manama, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.
The protestors were also convicted of participating in an “unlicensed protest.”
Arab-spring inspired protests erupted in Bahrain in February 2011. The Sunni Al-Khalifa family rules a population that is predominately Shia.
A Bahrain court Sunday sentenced two people to 15 years in prison for attempting to kill police officers, according to AFP.
Death sentences in Bahrain are often changed to life imprisonment, or 25 years.
At least 89 people have been killed since the uprisings began in 2011.
