Bombs and clashes shook Bahrain's stability on Monday after two homemade explosive devices went off overnight in a village near capital Manama and police battled rioters, police sources reported.
The homemade bombs went off in a Shiite village west of Manama as "security forces were confronting acts of sabotage, blocking of roads and attacks with molotov cocktails," a police statement said, according to Agence France Presse.
Bahrain's Shiite villages are frequently disrupted by clashes between government forces and protesters who oppose the ruling Sunni Khalifa family.
There were no reports of casualties but an investigation is underway, the police statement added, AFP reported.
In response, Bahrain's main Shiite opposition bloc Al Wefaq reported that government security forces attacked mourners in Saar.
They "used poisonous gases to attack... a religious establishment" where mourners had gathered causing "injuries and suffocations" among residents, AFP said.
Protests in Bahrain - triggered by the Arab Spring - began in February 2011 and were met with a brutal government crackdown.
Shiite protesters still take to the streets across the Gulf state, clashing with security forces and demanding that the Khalifas loosen their grip on Bahrain's government.
