The Bahraini press is threatening national unity and abusing the democratic system, the Kingdom’s Information Minister was quoted as saying Monday.
Nabeel Al Hamer was quoted during a meeting with newspaper editors as saying the government would not tolerate those in the press who are trying to "sabotage" the democratic reforms, Gulf News reported.
"We will not, under any pretext, tolerate those abusing the democracy now available in the kingdom in order to sabotage the democratic achievements," he told the editors.
"There is a huge difference between benefiting from freedom and abusing freedom."
The minister complained that a number of commentaries and news reports were based on "erroneous information and false premises", emphasizing that editors would assume full responsibility for such reports.
"We totally reject attempts by newspapers to incite the public through irresponsible news reports that promote sectarianism and sabotage the reforms launched in the kingdom," he said. He added that the newspaper chiefs would be held legally responsible. (Albawaba.com)
