Award-winning Bahraini photographer Ghada Khunji debuts her India photography series at Capital D Studio

Media opening: 27 November, 7pm-9:30pm

In her first exhibition in the Middle East, award-winning photographer Ghada Khunji will showcase her India photography series at Capital D Studio in Al Quoz later this month.
The Bahraini-born artist is based in Brooklyn, but travels several months out of the year to develop her body of work. The series of 24 colour photos were taken during her travels to India in 2008.
“Ghada is one of the region’s best new photographers, bringing an all-encompassing eye and unique sensibility to her work. Capital D Studio welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Ghada on her inaugural exhibition, which creates a further artistic link between the Gulf and India,” said Ayaad Damouni, General Manager, Capital D Studio.

“In particular, she is an inspiration for GCC women and emerging talent in the photography industry as she has carved a niche for herself in a relatively brief period, garnering critical success in the US and elsewhere,” he added.

Khunji’s photographs are known for documenting both landscapes and people from all over the world and highlighting colour and the inherent dignity of the human element.

Ghada Khunji was born in August, 1967 in Manama, Bahrain. She is a graduate of two of New York’s premiere arts institutions -- the Parsons School of Design and the International Center of Photography's documentary program.
In 2006, she was named the Lucie Discovery of the Year. The Lucie Awards are presented by the Lucie Foundation in Los Angeles, a non-profit, charitable foundation whose mission is to honor master photographers, discover and cultivate emerging talent and celebrate the appreciation of photography worldwide.
In January, 2007 she won American Photo magazine's Images of the Year in Photojournalism award. She has received the Golden Lights Award for Travel, and several of her black and white portraits were nominated for the black & white Spider Awards.
The India exhibition by Ghada Khunji will be open to the public from Friday 28 November to Sunday 30 November (inclusive) and then will be viewable online for the month of December at www.capitalDgallery.com. The studio will be open from 11am to 7pm during the exhibition.
