ALBAWABA - Multiple gunmen crashed a wedding opening fire on the attendees, killing one person and injuring at least five in Thionville, northeastern France.
Initial police reports suggested that the attack was linked to drug traffickers settling scores in the northeastern city. At least 100 people attended the reception in a wedding hall overnight Saturday to Sunday.
Two people were gravely wounded and one was in critical condition. The shooters fled the scene. "It was during a wedding," according to a police source.
"At a quarter past one in the morning, a group of people went outside to smoke in front of the hall, and then three heavily armed men arrived and opened fire in their direction" police report said.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the violence was motivated by a desire to settle scores related to drugs trafficking. "The wedding was not targeted as such, it was people who were at the wedding," a source told AFP.
The police added that the gunmen arrived at the scene in a 4x4 vehicle, though they were not able to specify where it had come from. The town hosting the wedding is located near the borders with Luxembourg and Germany.
