ALBAWABA - Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in the Russian capital of Moscow in his first official visit since taking power in Syria in December 2024.

Ahmed al-Sharaa will be meeting his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, who was known to be a great ally to the ousted leader of Syria, Bashar Assad, whose regime fell since the latest operation by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in late November.

The Kremlin also said that Putin and al-Sharaa will discuss the fate of Russia's two main bases in Syria: the Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia Province and a naval base in Tartus.

Ahmed al-Shara wants Russia to hand over Bashar Assad:

Bashar Assad's fate could be in danger, after a Syrian government source also told AFP that during his first visit to Russia, he will request the extradition of the ousted Syrian president, who fled there last December.

The source said, "President al-Sharaa will ask the Russian president to hand over all those who have committed war crimes and are in Russia, most notably Bashar Assad."

The Syrian president is accompanied by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani, Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, and other military and economic officials.
