Syria's embattled President Bashar Assad Saturday offered his condolences over the death of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Omar Karami, who passed away earlier this week.

Assad phoned Karami's son, Faisal, a former youth and sports minister, and offered his condolences, praising the late Karami for his national role.

Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri also offered his condolences in person.

"I relayed the condolences of the Custodian of the Two Mosques King Abdullah ... and the Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdel-Aziz and the Saudi leadership that appreciate the sacrifices the late prime minister had made and his role,” he said after visiting Karami’s residence.

Asiri also handed a letter from the king to Karami's son.

Karami died Thursday at the age of 80 after a long illness.
