Families of Jewish settlers in the West Bank who have had a family member killed during the Palestinian uprising will be provided with a bulletproof Mercedes by the army, Israel Radio said, cited by Haaretz newspaper.

It said Israeli forces used the vehicles during their occupation of south Lebanon, which ended last year.

The report said the army would also review Sunday a new ceramic-based system for bulletproofing other vehicles.

A settler spokesmen said they expected the army to pay the cost of fitting their vehicles with the system.

It was developed by a US firm along with settlers and costs $10,000 per vehicle, said the radio.

So far, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society has reported over 520 Palestinians killed and over 14,000 wounded in the uprising against 34 years of Israeli military occupation, compared to press reports of over 112 Israelis killed and over 600 wounded – Albawaba.com
