Palestinian President Yasser Arafat arrived in Amman on Tuesday for talks on the Middle East crisis with Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb, a Palestinian diplomatic source said.

During his short visit to Jordan, Arafat was due to discuss "the latest developments in the Palestinian arena in the light of Israel's continuing aggression against the Palestinian people," the source told AFP.

Jordan's King Abdullah, currently on a private visit abroad, urged the international community Saturday to take stronger action to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East, which he said was in "a critical period."

Arafat arrived in Jordan from Morocco where he met with King Mohammed.

King Mohammed reaffirmed his support for the Palestinian cause in talks with Arafat, the Maghrebe Arab Presse (MAP) news agency reported.

MAP said the king "expressed his profound concern and condemned the strategy of confrontation and repression of the Israeli government."

He also confirmed Morocco's willingness to do what it could to help end the "dramatic and deadly spiral" of violence currently gripping the Middle East and to "reinforce the peace process in the region."

Arafat stressed the importance of sending international monitors to the Occupied Territories, and of implementing the Mitchell report recommendations to “protect our people from the Israeli aggression,” the Palestinian news agency, WAFA, quoted him as saying.

The Palestinian president has met a number of Arab leaders in recent weeks to seek support for the Palestinian cause and, if possible, to hold an Arab summit on the 10-month-old uprising against 34 years of Israeli occupation.

However, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said last Wednesday it was "illogical" to convene a pan-Arab summit "every time something happens" - Albawaba.com
