The Arab League will hold an urgent meeting Sunday to discuss the ‘critical events’ taking place in Palestine.

In an interview with Al-Jazira satellite channel, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Esmat Abdel-Meguid said that a trilateral meeting was held in Cairo with himself, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, and EU Middle-East Envoy Miguel Moratinos to discuss the clashes that broke out on Thursday.

Abdel-Meguid said that Moratinos had been asked to make the necessary contacts with members of the EU to put an end to the ‘massacres’, which started as a result of Likud leader Ariel Sharon’s visit to Al-Harem Al-Sharif. Abdel-Meguid described the right wing leader as a man of “a black history, and a war criminal,” referring to Sharon’s involvement in the massacres of Sabra and Shatila in 1982.

The secretary said that Sharon was repeating his steps by “violating the holiness of Al-Haram Al-Sharif with his visit.”

Abdel Meguid denied that Arab countries had maintained silence over Israel’s violations, saying that the Arab League had taken a firm stance regarding the ‘critical, bloody events’ that were taking place.

Since the clashes started Thursday morning, Israeli soldiers have killed twenty Palestinians and injured more than five hundred – Albawaba.com.
