The secretary-general of the Arab League arrived Thursday for his first visit to Iraq since the ouster of Saddam Hussein. While in Iraq, Amr Moussa will work to organize a national reconciliation conference.
He came to Baghdad from Cairo with a mission of 34 Arab League members guarded under tight security.
Iraq's Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Political Affairs Lubaid Abbawi told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Moussa's visit would last few days during which he is scheduled to meet with President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, National Assembly Speaker Hajem Al-Hassani, Sunni and Shiite clerics, as well as political and tribal leaders.
Moussa's visit had been preceded by a visit from Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Ahmad bin Hilli.
On the proposed reconciliation conference, Abbawi said, "We cannot talk about this issue as we have yet to know what Amr Moussa's ideas are on the conference."
