Foreign ministers from the Arab League nations finally agreed to draft resolutions ahead of this week's summit in Kuwait despite growing tensions among member states, according to Agence France Presse.
Iraq's FM Hoshyar Zebari told AFP that “There was no tension whatsoever in the meeting. Host country Kuwait in fact has smoothed relations. There were no controversial issues or problems, and the atmosphere was very positive. The subject of the ... withdrawal of ambassadors [from Qatar] was never mentioned at all.”
Zebari said that all the drafts were approved unanimously. However, he declined to comment on whether "efforts would be made to heal the rifts" growing between member states, particularly in terms of the Saudi-Qatar relationship.
While the growing tension between the countries persist, previous reports indicated that the summit would be used as a forum to heal the rifts, but Algerian FM Ramtane Lamamra told AFP that "Not all issues are discussed in the meeting hall. Some issues are debated on the sidelines behind the scenes.”
The two-day summit is set to commence Tuesday, with sessions already officially designated to discuss international terrorism and ways to limit its impact on Arab countries, as well as funding for the Palestinian Authority and the conflict in Syria.
