Arab League chief Amr Mussa said Saturday in Cairo that Arab states would push for an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council because so many Palestinians have died during Israel's West Bank offensive.

Arab ambassadors at the United Nations have been tasked with pushing for such a meeting to discuss the deterioration of the situation in the West Bank, Mussa said after an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, AFP reported.

"We have given the necessary recommendations to the Arab ambassadors at the United Nations to ask for an emergency and immediate meeting of the UN Security Council, especially following reports of more than 100 martyrs today," Mussa told a press conference.

The foreign ministers of the 22-member Arab League met at the request of the Palestinian Authority to approve steps to back the Palestinians in face of the Israeli military offensive.

The Palestinians were also seeking measures to protect Arafat, who has been holed up in his offices in Ramallah. (Albawaba.com)
