Yemeni officials are awaiting results from lab tests on an unknown letter sent from Canada to a local pen pal. The letter contained a suspicious white poweder feared to be mixed with infectious anthrax bacteria.

“Reliable” sources were quoted by the Yemen Times, published Monday, as saying that the person who received the letter went straight to the authorities.

The director general of the Central Laboratory, Abduh Mohammed Al Buraiki told the Sana-based paper that the letter had been carefully opened. Doctors are testing the white substance, and the results are expected in 72 hours.

According to the paper, the Yemeni embassy in Belgium received a similar letter laced with white material. Authorities in Belgium have cleaned up the embassy with chemical cleansers and immunized the staff, it added.

Up to this moment, authorities have not determined the nature of the white substance, said the report – Albawaba.com
