The London-based Amnesty International has called on the Tunisian authorities to halt what it describes as an unprecedented escalation in incidents of harassment and pressure against rights activists in the country, reported the BBC.online.

In a new report, Amnesty said the campaign started when the Tunisian Human Rights League was suspended last November.

Since then, all meetings of its membership in Tunis and elsewhere have been prevented by the security services, said the news service.

The report said legal proceedings had been opened against the league's president, Moktar Trifi, and other officials.

Amnesty said these and a number of other incidents were flagrant violations of Tunisia's international engagements – Albawaba.com
