Several Hizbullah operatives met with representatives of Al Qaeda and other extremist Islamic groups in September in the area bordering Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, a U.S. official said.
The meeting took place in the Paraguayan city Ciudad del Este apparently to discuss new attacks against the US and Israel, CNN reported. The city has a big Arabic speaking population and dozens of people have been detained in raids since the September 11 attacks.
Home to some 20,000 Lebanese Muslims, it has been described by the State Department as a "focal point for Islamic extremism in Latin America."
However, the significance of the meeting was not clear, an official told AP. He added that supporters of Hizbullah frequently gather to discuss the Mideast situation and sometimes brainstorm potential operations. (Albawaba.com)
