Algerian security forces Wednesday arrested members of an arms smuggling network from Libya and an investigation is ongoing in the eastern and central regions of Algeria to track down members of the ring who are still at large, the Tunisian Telegraph reported.
Two Algerians were arrested in the operation, and 22 shotguns, three hunting rifles, and large quantities of ammunition were also seized, according to Algeria's al-Nahaar TV on Wednesday. Security forces in Algiers chased the Libyan network to the heart of Bir al-Aatr in Wadi Souf near the Tunisian border. Investigations have been launched from an industrial area in the Algerian capital.
Algerian security forces have managed to seize large quantities of weapons over the past few months in the area of Wadi Souf, in the far east of the country. The area has seemingly become a crossroads for weapons, likely coming from Libya.
Additionally, the Algerian Ministry of Defense said in a statement Wednesday that Algerian Army forces discovered and destroyed seven hideouts for militants in the province of Teezi Ouzo and Burj Bouririj, as well as claymore land mines and three IEDs.
