Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika reshuffled his government Thursday, by notably replacing his finance minister, a statement from Bouteflika's office said.

Outgoing finance minister Abdellatif Benachenhou was replaced by the current trade minister, Mourad Medelci, the statement said without giving a reason for Benachenhou's departure.

Other key posts were unchanged, including the foreign, justice, interior, and energy portfolios. Prime Minister Ali Benflis also continued in his functions.

"This measure, which comes at the start of a support programme to restart the economy, is based on a desire for the best cooperation possible between different sectors and a better coherence and effectiveness in government action," the statement said -- ALGIERS (AFP)
