Algeria: Police chief shot dead by former aide

Algerian security sources were quoted as saying on Thursday by Alarabiya that the country's Director General of National Security, Colonel Ali Tounsi died of his wounds in hospital after being shot from a pistol owned by a former police colonel. Tounsi was shot while in his office. According to the sources, the shooter was the head of the police helicopter units.

 

There was no accurate information about the circumstances of the incident that rocked the police and various other security forces in Algeria. But sources told  Alarabiya they had heard a gunshot in the office of Tounsi. The sources added the attacker acted in retaliation for Tounsi's to remove him from office."

 

Meanwhile, an Algerian website reported that "Colonel Ali Tounsi was a victim to an armed attack in his office by one of his aides." Tounsi was a former officer in the Algerian intelligence. in the pastThree years ago, he was subjected to an assassination attempt, which was part of efforts by Islamists to target the state's security services leaders.
