Algeria, whose dispute with Morocco over Western Sahara had crippled the Arab Maghreb Union, was hopeful to host a summit of the North African bloc in the next weeks, its foreign minister said Saturday.
"We had achieved a breakthrough during our meeting and our hope is great to hold a summit in the next weeks," Abdelaziz Belkhadem told reporters at the end of a gathering of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) foreign ministers.
According to Reuters, Belkhadem added: "I hail the meeting results and the consultations about holding a summit in Algiers soon".
Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia founded the North African grouping in 1989.
An AMU summit planned last June in Algiers was called off at the last minute after Moroccan King Mohammed chose not to attend.
Mohamed Benaissa, the Moroccan Foreign Minister, said the latest meeting "prepared the path to overcome problems. The summit date will be decided after further consultations". (Albawaba.com)
