Two leaders of Algeria's banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) party were released on Wednesday after being jailed for threatening state security more than a decade ago.
The authorities freed FIS leader Abassi Madani, 72, from house arrest shortly after his second-in-command, Ali Belhadj, 47 was released from prison, a lawyer for the two said, according to news agencies.
The two men were sentenced in July 1992 to 12 years in prison for threatening state security. Madani was removed from jail and placed under house arrest in August 1997.
"The two leaders are completely free," said lawyer Abennour Ali-Yahia. However, the two are banned from any political activity, officials said. (Albawaba.com)
