Algeria has decided to expand its territorial waters by 24 nautical miles, citing the need for a contiguous zone for its international water border, the Algerian foreign office has announced on its official internet site.

The decision was made by Presidential decree and the Algerians say it is backed up by UN resolutions that entitle countries to delimit the extent of their territorial waters. The move entitles Algeria to treat the waters as its sovereign territory.
