An estimated fifty people participating in anti government demonstrations in Algiers had been injured, including a French photojournalist, Berber tribal chiefs said Wednesday.
The clash occurred in the Kabylie region east of Algiers in which demonstrators threw stones as well as molotov cocktails at government security forces who were trying to protect public buildings from being damaged, KUNA reported.
The public stir came Wednesday, after a speech delivered Tuesday by Algerian President Abdulaziz Bouteflika, who said that the Berber language, Tamazight, would become an official language in Algeria alongside Arabic, however would not become a national language.
Berber tribes of the Kabylie region firmly demand an equal footing between the languages of Tamazight and Arabic. (Albawaba.com)
