Algeria: American warned to limit movement

Published January 20th, 2008 - 07:31 GMT

The American embassy in the Algerian capital Algiers warned its citizens on Sunday to limit their movements and to avoid places frequented by Westerners following a spate of Islamist bomb attacks. "In response to continuing indications of possible terrorist attacks in Algiers, the embassy has instructed its employees to avoid non-essential movements around the city until further notice, and may occasionally restrict movement completely," a statement on the embassy's website said.

"American citizens in Algeria are strongly encouraged to limit their movements and to avoid places frequented by Westerners such as restaurants, nightclubs, churches, and schools. Americans are reminded to remain alert and adhere to prudent security practices."

On December 11 two suicide bombing attacks -- claimed by the North Africa branch of Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network -- killed at least 41 people.
