US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright telephoned Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdel-Ilah Khatib to discuss the stalemated Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, Petra news agency reported late Friday.

Albright discussed with Khatib the "efforts" deployed to push forward the Middle East peace process, particularly on the Israeli-Palestinian track, the agency said without providing further details.

The call is the latest in a series of diplomatic moves underway to break the stalemate in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority since the Camp David summit in July failed to make any progress.

Last week Jordan's King Abdullah II traveled to Ramallah, in the West Bank, and to Tel Aviv for separate talks with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak - AMMAN (AFP)
