US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright arrived Tuesday morning in Algiers to attend the signing of a peace accord to end more than two years of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea over disputed territory.
Albright arrived in the Algerian capital a little after 11:00 am (1000 GMT) and was scheduled to attend the signing ceremony at the Palais des Nations in the Algerian capital on Tuesday afternoon.
She was also due to hold talks with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who will also be present.
The ceremony comes after a initial cease-fire deal signed in June between the Horn of Africa neighbors, putting a stop to bloody border fighting which has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
The United Nations and the United States were involved in brokering a settlement between the two countries, as did Algeria, which chaired the Organisation of African Unity when the cease-fire was signed.
Albright was scheduled to leave Algiers at the end of the afternoon, to fly on to Budapest -- ALGIERS (AFP)
