Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara has launched a fresh attack on US Middle East policy, accusing it of backing Israeli "aggression" while showing "hostility towards the Iraqi people."

"The United States practices the policy of the sole remaining superpower, flagrantly supporting Israel in its barbaric aggression against the unarmed Palestinian people and adopting a hostile attitude towards the Iraqi people under embargo," government newspapers quoted Shara as telling a meeting of Arab youth on Saturday.

He accused the United States of "granting Israel the most sophisticated weapons and depriving the Arabs of the most elementary means of defense." He stressed Syria's "unconditional" support for "Palestinian resistance and the intifada ... until the liberation and the creation of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

Meanwhile, al-Shara received Saturday Mrs. Fadwa al-Barghouthi, wife of Marwan al-Barghouthi, Secretary of Fatah Movement in the West Bank and a member of Palestinian Elected Legislative Council, who was arrested by Israeli troops last April.

During the meeting, Mrs. al-Barghouthi spoke about the Israeli plan to prosecute the Palestinian Intifada leaders through prosecuting her husband. According to SANA, Syria’s top diplomat told Mrs. Barghouthi that Marwan became a symbol to the Palestinian Intifada and lauded his strong will in resisting the Israeli occupation.
