Al-Qaeda's North African branch has claimed Sunday's attack on a beach resort in Ivory Coast, saying it was revenge for France's recent offensive against Islamist militants in the Sahel, Reuters reported.

The attack killed 18 people including three Ivorian special forces personnel and three of the attackers.

Four French citizens were also among the dead. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve arrived in Ivory Coast on Tuesday to support the investigation into the attack.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb released its statement about the attack on the group's social media accounts on Monday.
