AFP reports that the militant extremist group Al-Nusra Front claims to have downed two Russian drones near an airport in northwest Syria.

Nusra Front posted pictures online of burning airplane wreckage, with a statement on one of their official Twitter accounts of the "downing of two Russian reconnaissance drones over Abu Duhur military airport" in Idlib province, according to AFP.

The Syrian regime army started using Russian unmanned drones for military survilence on September 23. Russia began airstrikes on opposition targets in Syria a week later, on September 30. If Nusra Front's claims are confirmed, it will be the first time that militant extremist forces in Syria have downed any Russian aircraft since the airstrikes began.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group confirmed that Nusra Front downed two drones at Abu Duhur. The organization could not confirm if the drones were Russian.

Nusra Front is affiliated with al-Qaeda in Syria. The militant extremist group has maintained control of the Abu Duhur airport since September 9.

As Al Bawaba recently reported, last week, the Syrian regime army recaptured a major city in Aleppo from Nusra Front. In September, local forces killed over 100 Nusra Front militants during a series of clashes in the Idlib province. Nusra Front still controls towns and land in northwestern Syria.
