BP has appointed AbdulKarim Al Mazmi as Head of Country for the GCC, Levant and Yemen – a cross segmental role that will see him oversee the company’s up- and down-stream operations in the region.

A UAE national, AbdulKarim joined BP in 1998 as Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager for BP Sharjah. He was appointed Deputy General Manager in 2002, before moving on to become President and General Manager of BP Sharjah Oil Company in 2003. In September 2005, he took on the role of Country Manager for Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

A key priority for Al Mazmi will be the implementation of a diversity and nationalization programme for BP in the region. “BP has a global policy of being what we call a ‘local energy company’,” he explained.

“We are an integral part of the communities in which we operate and the members of those communities are our peers, our friends and our neighbours. Our aim is therefore develop local workforce capability, promote local enterprise through localization of the supply chain and bring mutual benefit.”

Al Mazmi began his oil & gas career in 1981 with GASCO in Abu Dhabi, where he held numerous positions including that of Plant Manager at the company’s Asab NGL Extraction Plant. He holds a Bachelors of Science with an Honours degree from the UAE University.
