ALBAWABA - In a limited cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, Sudanese army commander and chairman of the Sovereign Council General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan named a new foreign minister, according to official media.
According to a council announcement, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese army and the president of the Sovereign Council, named an additional three ministers and a new foreign minister on Sunday.
Ambassador Hussein Awad is replaced as foreign minister by Ambassador Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif. Awad was named by Al-Burhan in April to succeed Ambassador Ali al-Sadiq, who had been appointed following Burhan's takeover in 2021.
Prior to his retirement, Youssef held many roles in Sudan's foreign ministry. He led Arab-Chinese friendship clubs and served on the Committee of Elders, which worked to address the situation that arose following the 2021 coup.
Burhan nominated undersecretaries to ministerial seats in January 2022, maintaining ministers from Darfur-based armed formations and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, with the exception of two sacked for allegedly aiding the Rapid Support Forces.
The cabinet reshuffle comes amid the ongoing battle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April.
Burhan fired the majority of civilian ministers in January 2022, replacing them with undersecretaries from their respective ministries. He kept ministers from the armed activities in Darfur and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North.
